Island hopping in Greece: slow down and experience more

"Every island has its own rhythm"

When we started living and travelling in Greece more often, we quickly realised that the most memorable places were not always the ones at the top of every list. Of course, the famous islands are beautiful, and some places are well-known for a reason. But the moments that stayed with us most often happened somewhere in between.

A small harbour where we only planned to stop for coffee. A quiet beach we found because someone in the village told us to “drive a little further”. A taverna without a menu, where the owner simply explained what was cooking that day.

That is exactly what makes the Greek islands so special to us. Every island has its own rhythm. And you only really feel that rhythm when you do not rush through it.

Island hopping often sounds like trying to fit as many islands as possible into one trip. Three nights here, two nights there, quickly moving on to the next harbour. On paper, that may seem logical, especially when the ferries seem to connect well. But in reality, you often spend more time packing, checking out, waiting and arriving again than truly enjoying where you are.

That is why we prefer to look at island hopping differently.

Not as a route where you try to tick off as many names as possible, but as a journey that is allowed to unfold slowly. Maybe you start on an island with a little more life, where you wander through narrow streets and have dinner by the harbour in the evening. Then you continue to a quieter island, where the days naturally slow down. Where you walk to the bakery in the morning, discover a small beach during the day and return to the same taverna in the evening because it simply felt right.

That variety is what makes an island-hopping trip so beautiful. Not every island has to offer everything. One island may be perfect for walking, another for slow beach days. Some islands surprise you with villages, local products or dramatic landscapes. Others are special because very little needs to happen at all.

Over the years, we have learned that the best island combinations are often not the most obvious ones. Sometimes a lesser-known island fits the pace of a journey much better than a place everyone has heard of. Sometimes it is better to visit one island less, so you have more time to truly arrive in the places you do visit.

The ferry is part of that experience too. To us, it is not lost travel time, but part of the journey. You watch one island slowly disappear behind you and the next one slowly come closer. For a little while, there is nothing to do but look at the sea and enjoy the feeling of being on your way to somewhere new.

But a relaxed island-hopping trip does need a route that makes sense. Not all islands are easy to combine, and ferries do not always run every day. A beautiful itinerary therefore does not start only with the question: which islands are nice? It starts with: which islands fit naturally together, with the season and with the way you want to travel?

Because when the route works, there is space. Space to stay a little longer. To follow a local tip. To have an afternoon without a plan. To stop trying to see everything, and instead really experience where you are.

That is how we love to experience the Greek islands. With attention, with time and with enough freedom along the way. Not rushing from harbour to harbour, but travelling slowly from island to island.

Because sometimes you see more when you try to see less.
And that is often when the islands stay with you the longest.
