Why Greece in May feels so special

“In May, Greece still feels like you almost have it to yourself.”

It’s a time of year we personally look forward to again and again.

Not because everything is already lively and in full swing, but because Greece in May still has a certain calmness to it. Summer is already in the air, yet the country still moves at a gentle pace. The landscapes are green, flowers are in bloom, and along the way you catch the scent of wild herbs growing beside the roads. Especially during road trips through the Peloponnese or walks in northern Greece, we find ourselves reminded every year of just how beautiful the country is during this season.

But maybe it’s the evenings that make May feel truly special.

Tables slowly return to the seaside, village squares become livelier as the evening goes on, and children play outside until late while the sun sets later each day. You naturally stay longer over dinner, order one more drink, and before you know it, the whole evening has passed.
That relaxed rhythm feels different from the height of summer. Calmer. More local too.

Slow mornings and quiet beaches

What we perhaps love most about May are the quiet mornings.
A coffee in the sun while a village slowly wakes up. Roads where you barely pass another car. Beaches where only a few people have arrived before you.
That sense of calm makes it easy to truly enjoy the moment. No rushing. No strict planning.
And although it is still spring, you can feel summer slowly approaching everywhere. The sea begins to warm up, and later in May many travellers take their first swim of the year, especially in southern Greece.

Perfect for both active and relaxed travel

May is also one of our favourite months because it allows you to combine nature, relaxation, and active days so easily.
It is warm enough to spend most of your time outdoors, but not too hot for hiking, cycling, or exploring throughout the day. As a result, travelling naturally feels more relaxed.
Maybe that is why we so often recommend May to travellers who want to truly experience Greece. Not only the well known places, but also the feeling of long evenings, quiet beaches, and daily life slowly moving back outdoors.

Thinking about discovering Greece in May yourself? We would love to help you create a journey that matches your pace and way of travelling.
