Meteora-The place where you can touch the sky

The Meteora Monasteries have been a UNESCO Heritage site since 1988. The name "Meteora" means "suspended in air" and it aptly describes their lofty position, situated up to 400 meters above the ground. Originally, there were about 24 monasteries, but today only 6 remain standing. They were constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries by monks. Initially, the monks inhabited in caves but collaborated to build the monasteries entirely by hand, transporting materials using ropes, nets, baskets, and ladders. Each monastery offers insightful displays about their history, providing a fascinating glimpse into their construction and significance.
