Highlights

  • During this active walking holiday in Crete, you explore the island’s rugged heart. You walk through well-known gorges such as the Imbros Gorge and the most spectacular section of the Samaria Gorge. Narrow passages, towering rock walls and ancient paths create a different natural experience every day.
  • Variety is key: one day you walk through mountainous landscapes, the next along the coast. The E4 coastal trail leads you from Chora Sfakion to the car-free village of Loutro, with panoramic views over the Libyan Sea and plenty of opportunities for a refreshing swim along the way.
  • Active travel here is never rushed. You stay in one place for the entire week, combining walking days with moments of rest: a free day by the sea, a boat trip along the coast or a long lunch in a local taverna. This creates a perfect balance between activity and relaxation.

The days at a glance

  • Arrival in Crete – Chora Sfakion

    Day 1

After arriving in Crete, you travel to Chora Sfakion, a small-scale village on the island’s south coast. You stay here for the entire week, allowing you to settle into the relaxed rhythm of South Crete straight away. Time for a first walk along the sea and a relaxed evening in a local taverna.

  • Askifou Plateau walk

    Day 2

Today you start with an accessible walk across the Askifou Plateau. Quiet country roads, small villages and wide-open views make this an ideal first walking day. You gradually build up your pace while getting to know the inland landscapes of Crete.

  • Imbros Gorge walk

    Day 3

The Imbros Gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges in Crete. You walk through a dry riverbed and pass narrow sections between towering rock walls. An active and varied day, perfectly rounded off with a refreshing swim in the sea.

  • Samaria Gorge (Iron Gates)

    Day 4

Today you experience the famous Samaria Gorge. By boat you reach Agia Roumeli, from where you walk to the iconic Iron Gates, the narrowest part of the gorge. This approach allows you to experience this natural wonder intensively, without completing the full long crossing.

    Day 5

You briefly swap nature for culture and travel to Chania, a charming Venetian town. Wander through narrow streets, along the harbour and through lively neighbourhoods. Prefer a rest day? Then stay in the Sfakia area and enjoy the beach and the sea.
